CD/DVD/BluRay drives and burners
A drive can still be an integral component of modern computers. It allows access to various removable media such as CDs, DVDs or Blu-ray discs. Here we distinguish between drives that only provide access to data, and those that also allow data to be written. Another name for these is optical disc drive (ODD). DVD and Blu-ray disc
DVDs came on the market in the mid-1990s. As the successor to the CD, the Digital Versatile Disc had a significantly higher storage capacity of 4.7 GB for single-layer discs and 8.5 GB for dual-layer discs. DVDs are still the most popular storage medium for moving images today. The further development of the DVD is the Blu-ray disc (BD). The capacity was able to be further increased to up to 128 GB (4 layers). This makes it possible to store videos with a significantly higher resolution.
What drive do I need?
When deciding between these two drive options, the main consideration is what purpose it will be used for. If the computer will be used for everyday office work, a DVD drive will usually suffice. Are you a big film fan and often use the PC to watch the latest movies? With a Blu-ray drive you can enjoy your favorite film in the best quality. Furthermore, you should ask yourself what volume of data you would like to process. You can, of course, upgrade from a DVD drive to a Blue-ray drive at any time. You will still be able to play your DVDs then.
