AMD - multicore power for all purposes
For a long time, AMD continued to optimize its processes and technologies until the Ryzen and Threadripper CPUs led to the long-awaited breakthrough. The current business figures underpin the upward trend: in 2019, the US company generated a turnover of around 6.7 billion US dollars with around 11,400 employees and significantly increased its market share in desktop and server CPUs.
Ryzen CPUs deliver computing power for everyone
Ryzen processors based on the Zen architecture were launched in 2017 and are currently being sold in their third generation. The current line-up covers a very broad spectrum from low-cost, energy-saving processors to powerful multi-core computing units for professional applications. All products are structured according to the same nomenclature, making them very easy to categorize. The models are divided into four performance classes, which are numbered 3, 5, 7 and 9, similar to the Intel Core-i models. These are followed by a four-digit number, with the first digit representing the generation and the other digits indicating the performance capability. The currently lowest-performing model is the Ryzen 3 3100 with 4 cores and 8 threads, which is primarily intended for office applications. The spearhead of the range is the Ryzen 9 3950X, which, with 16 cores, 32 threads and a maximum boost clock of 4.7 GHz, offers powerful performance for multi-core applications such as rendering or video and image processing. AMD also offers computing units with an integrated graphics unit. These APUs can be recognized by the G suffix in the model name, such as the Ryzen 5 3400G. In contrast to the processors without the G suffix, you do not need a dedicated graphics unit here, which makes these APUs particularly suitable for use in small, space-saving computers or in very inexpensive computers for low graphics requirements. Threadripper - computing power for servers and workstations
If the 16 cores and 32 threads of the top model Ryzen 3950X are not enough for you, you should take a look at the Threadripper models from AMD. These CPUs are primarily developed for professional servers and workstations and offer up to 64 cores and 128 threads at a maximum clock speed of 4.3 GHz. Simulation programs and scientific calculations in particular often benefit from a large number of cores and threads, which can save you time and therefore money. The Threadripper processors also impress with their support for fail-safe ECC RAM and the provision of up to 88 PCIe 4.0 lanes for integrating high-performance GPUs or NVMe storage.
